Speaking from the position of worker, I feel that this is an intrusion of my privacy.  While I may be on company time, as long as I’m not doing anything illegal and am still being productive and I’m not doing anything harming the company, there is no reason for Big Brother knowing what I am doing, where I’m going and how much time I’m using doing whatever.  The next step in that situation is putting monitors in the bathrooms; I could be wasting several valuable company minutes depending on how well whatever I ate last night agreed with me.  There are also the security measures that would be violated with the recording of keystrokes.  Many people are allowed to take their work home with them.  Those files are needed to be password protected.  By tracking keystrokes in a centralized location, it opens up the possibility of it being compromised should the central server get cracked.  Then, not only are valuable company documents compromised, but any private data that was input by the owner of very large important accounts is also compromised.  It would surely be the end of the company that I would work for from any resultant lawsuits from the lack of confidentiality, and depending on what was changed, I could end up being sued for leaking confidential files or thrown in prison for falsifying documents.  It is a greater liability for the company to keep track of everything the workers do because it’s a digital process and anything digital can be changed.

On the other hand, as a supervisor, I wouldn’t want to know too much of what my subordinates are doing.  By knowing the exact actions of my workers, it leaves me up to being involved as an accomplice or getting done in by being aware of what was happening but not putting a stop to whatever illegal activity was going on.  By being ignorant of the situation, it leaves me with a very thin chance of escaping prosecution.  I also know that people will take mental breaks during the day, especially if the work is stressful and mentally strenuous.  This allows my subordinates a chance to relieve some pressure so that they are not totally burned out doing their tasks.  Burnt out employees are as worthless to business as non-productive employees; they can be motivated with their jobs to improve, burnt out employees have spent their energies and can’t improve without doing some serious physical or psychological damage.
